One of my friends did something I probably never will do... run 26.2 miles in less than 5 hours! I can't believe it and am unbelievably proud of her! A group of us went downtown to see her accomplish this feat of athleticism along with support Skip as he completed the half marathon.
Friday night I went with Betsy to pick up her race packet!! I was excited; she was nervous... my excitedness (is that a word) finally rubbed off when she got her shirt.
Saturday (aka Diana's day of fun) ended with Diana and I making "Team Betsy" shirts as a surprise. They actually turned out a lot better than I had hoped!!!
Don't mind the hair... it was late! Marathon morning came really (really) early. I can't really tell if Betsy is nervous or not?!?!???!!!
Skip seemed to lighten the mood as he began his 13.1 mile run. I do believe this is the best picture of Skip I've ever seen!!!
As they ran forward we (Kate, Diana, and I) got in our cars to drive to mile 5 (or 6). It was a long walk to the car and we had to stop for a break!!
We made it to mile 5 and since we didn't know if we'd missed Skip and Betsy we started yelling for them. "SKIP! BETSY! HAS ANYONE SEEN SKIP AND BETSY?!?!!!" It's only funny when you realize there were 2,400 people running the marathon (doesn't count the half-marathon runners). They finally came and Skip stripped half his cloths off in mid run (very talented) and kept going... on to the finish line!
It was back to the car and a quick drive to the finish line... man, we're tired and we've driven the whole thing! I missed Skip coming across the finish line, luckily Diana (our official photographer didn't)
Apparently, beer has a lot of carbs; thus it's a great after race drink! I would have thought gatorade or water...
He's still alive... don't worry!! Actually, I don't think he was in as much pain as he looks. It was back to the cars for a trip to mile 23 to see Betsy again! Seriously... we are tired!!
At mile 23 she looked really tired... until she saw our cool shirts!!
Seriously... she just ran 23 miles!!!
Skip decided to run with Betsy to the finish line... very sweet of him except it would have been nice for him to tell us. After waiting for Skip for a little while we decided to leave him because we'd rather have him lost in the city than to miss Betsy finishing her first marathon. We made it just in time!!
Wow!
I love this picture!
Team Betsy!!! I still can't believe she's a marathon runner! 26.2 miles in 4 hours 49 minutes and 34 seconds... simply amazing!!! |
